Ghosts of Alcatraz by Carol Lynne
My review
rating: 4 of 5 stars
From the publisher:
Suffocation, mutilation and dismemberment aren’t the normal outside influences that bring two people together, but inside the newly refurbished Alcatraz Prison, anything can happen.
Inmates begin dying in shocking and sometimes gruesome ways. The deaths prompt Warden Jensen Black to bring in sexy parapsychologist, Brian Phipps. With the help of Brian, Jensen hopes to get to the bottom of what is killing the men he is responsible for. What he didn’t count on is falling and falling hard for the smaller man with the heart of a lion.
The attraction between the two men is instantaneous, but before they could fully explore the depths of their passion, the ghosts set their sites on Brian. As their relationship begins to heat up, the danger escalates, leaving both men to wonder if they’ll ever make it off Alcatraz alive.
Wow, this was quite different from what I’ve learned to expect from Carol Lynne, and I hope that she continues this as a series. (There’s evidence at the end of the book that she will.)
Yes, this book did have some Lynne staples–instant attraction, falling in love practically at first sight, larger man/smaller man, and hot sex; however, the paranormal element was new. I enjoyed the brief description she gives us of the world in 2020, and I thought it clever of her to use Alcatraz to house hackers and computer geniuses who’ve threatened nations rather than serial killers, etc. I was almost shocked at how gory some of the details were. I’m just not used to that from this author. She include a myriad of frightening scenarios–spontaneous combustion, possession, dismemberment, and exsanguination. If you like a little gore and mystery with your romance, try this one.
